ALF Musicians and LCHS 7/8 Join for Concert
La Cañada High School 7/8 band and orchestra presented a concert that included some young musicians performing alongside them. This special concert brought select musicians from the Assistance League of Flintridge elementary school instrumental music program to rehearse and play side-by-side with their junior high school counterparts, under the direction of the LCHS 7/8 Band and orchestra teacher James Myers.
“This concert helps bridge the gap between the elementary schools and junior high school and hopefully inspires these musicians to continue playing when they arrive at the junior high school and high school,” explained Mr. Myers at the concert. For many of the younger students, this was a reunion with Myers, who served for six years as an assistant brass teacher with the ALF program and is an alumnus of both the ALF program and LCHS.
Thanks to the LCHS Music Parents Association, the members of the ALF Concert Band and String Orchestra were treated to a pizza dinner between rehearsal and the concert. Volunteers from ALF and LCHS MPA served as chaperones and hosts for the youngsters. For many of the elementary students, this was their first visit to the La Cañada High School campus.
The combined string orchestras performed the “Majestic March,” and the combined bands filled the stage to give a rousing rendition of “1812 Overture” by Tchaikovsky, arranged by John Higgins. The ALF concert band is led by John Tegmyer and the ALF string orchestra by Sahak Karapetyan.
